A Pristine Primary | designKC

designKC covered the primary suite Faust Construction rebuilt on the top floor of a 1954 traditional house in Sunset Hill, near the Country Club Plaza. Dan Brown of SixTwentyOne drew it and Kali Buchanan of KBID handled the interiors.

The design asked for continuous surfaces, tight reveals and curved ceilings, in an upper level where nothing was square, level or plumb. The answer was to build a true, plumb shell inside the existing structure first, so the precision details had something to register against. As Brian Faust put it to the magazine, “the cleaner and more minimal the design becomes, the less room there is to hide imperfections.”

Curves were added to soften the roof’s low peaks. The finished suite adds a walk-through dressing room, a second-floor laundry, and an office above the garage with French doors onto a Juliet balcony.
