American Builders Quarterly interviewed Brian Faust about building modern in a market that had very little of it before 2005.

The useful part of the conversation is what modern actually demands of a builder, as opposed to what it looks like. Long spans and minimal structure ask for engineering that conventional framing does not. Tight reveals and continuous surfaces only work if the subcontractors can hold a tolerance, which narrows the field of who can do the work. Rain-screen wall assemblies keep water off the sheathing on facades that have nowhere to hide a flashing detail.
